TWHST both competes in and hosts many competitions throughout the year. They are split into three groups:
• In House Competitions
• Inter-Club Competitions
• Individual Competitions
• Other Events
In House
In House competitions provide a friendly atmosphere for swimmers to get used to a competitive environment. They also
allow swimmers to gain times which can then be used for entry into other types of galas.
All our In-House events rely on volunteers for all jobs and providing raffle prizes. If you feel you can help in any way, do not hesitate to say so - if not, come along anyway and enjoy the atmosphere!

This is competed for annually at the second Club Tadpole Gala (usually held in September). It is presented to the youngest swimmer in the Hambleton District who can swim one length of the pool unassisted using any stroke.

Application forms are held in the ‘Club Notices’ folder which is normally on the check-in desk and are available
up to three weeks before the event.

Held twice a year for swimmers aged 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 years only. It is designed to encourage younger members to 'have a go' and take part in a 'fun' gala.
Swimmers will compete against other TWHST members of the same age group and the whole gala is organised so that
there is no pressure put on the young children.
Don’t be put off if you feel you are not good enough, all we ask is that you can swim a length competently.
Trophies are awarded to the winner of each age group, and the Tadpole Trophy is awarded to the swimmer/swimmers
(if there is a tie) attaining the most points overall.
Please note that the 9 years and under boys/girls butterfly events do not count towards age group trophies
or the Tadpole trophy, but are open to all swimmers aged 9 & under.

You do not have to enter every stroke.
Entry forms are available from the Club Desk, usually three weeks before the event date. Each gala must be
entered separately.

These are held every year over three separate days to cover all age groups. The championships cover 25m events in all four strokes for the Under 8s.
For the 9, 10 & 11 year old swimmers the events are over 50m except for the Individual Medley (IM) which is 100m.
For the 12 years old upwards all events are 100m except the IM which is 200m.
Every single swimmer in the Club is encouoraged to enter as many events as they possibly can.
Included in the Championships is an 'Armbands' competition which is competed for over the three days of the Championships and is designed for those swimmers under 6 years of age who can swim one width of the training pool. Medals are awarded to all swimmers and a trophy is given for the girl & boy who score the most points over the three days. Points are awarded according to the position attained in each race.
These championships provide an opportunity for swimmers to gain competition experience in a Club environment and can also be the spur to getting that new personal best (pb) time. They also provide an opportunity to see swimmers at all levels of ability compete. This is particularly useful to new members, who can get an idea of what they may be capable of in the future.

Entry forms for all three rounds of the Club Championships are available from the Club Desk from January.
Whilst we appreciate early entries, we'll always try to accommodate people who have second thoughts

Time Trials (Individuals)
|
|
 |
 |
 |
|
 |
|
These are not strictly competitions, but are arranged to find out what your latest times are. Some competitions require that you meet a qualifying time and time trials can give you the chance to achieve this.
Most external competitions require that you submit your time for each event that you enter and that those times have to be validated by a Club Official. This is an ASA requirement which then ensures that you are fairly entered into the heat that reflects your standard of swimming.

If you wish to enter a competition but do not have a recorded time, please speak to your coach.

Watch out for entry forms on the Club Desk at least two weeks before the date of the competition for the
stroke that you wish to enter. Competition Dates can be found on the

Inter-Club
If you want to take part in Inter-Club competitions (we actively encourage this), please let the Team Manager know (individual Leagues are managed
by different people - their contact details are included below). If you are selected for a gala, your name will be found on the team sheet on the Club Noticeboards.
Most galas take place on a Saturday afternoon/evening and last approximately 2 hours, excluding travelling time. Warm up usually starts 30 minutes before
the start time. The Team Manager will inform the children about the races they are to swim. Swimmers are encouraged to travel on the coach if possible
and parents are welcomed also. On the return journey from an away fixture, every effort is made to stop for fish & chips, an essential part of any
gala!
It is up to the parent to ensure that the swimmer has enough to drink, with small amounts of food to eat after warm up or between events.
At events such as the County Championships and A/B grade meets, which might have a morning, afternoon and evening session, sophisticated meal planning
is definitely required. It is suggested that you do not rely on the catering facilities at any pool. These can be very busy and may not have the
selection that you would hope for. You may only have a short time window to take a meal and then allow for digestion before the next warm ups.
If in any doubt take more than you need. More information about swimming, eating and nutrition can be found
here.
You will soon learn which pools have good or poor spectator facilities. Most only have plastic seating; so if your bones are close to your flesh,
take a cushion! Be warned, most pools are extremely warm - wear cotton. You will also need plenty of cold drinks as dehydration is a serious risk.
Leeds International Pool is a notable exception to the norm - if you attend a gala there, ensure that you have several layers of thermal clothing,
jackets, blankets and flasks of hot drinks to fight the chill.

The Club tries to arrange at least two 'friendly' competitions during the year. These are designed for the swimmers who are not yet up to League Gala
standard. In order to ensure that the true spirit of a Friendly is adhered to, strict maximum times are applied to each race in these galas.
Swimmers who exceed these times will be disqualified.
|
|
 |
 |
 |
|
 |
Whilst we make every effort to ask as many swimmers as possible to take part in these competitions, we are
only human and do forget people! We encourage you to make your interest known to the Competitions Secretary
if you would like to take part in a Friendly gala.
Participation is encouraged from all Club members aged 8 and over.

TWHST competes in two league competitions throughout the year, The Ridings League and The North Yorkshire League.
Swimmers from the age of 8 can be expected to take part in one or more of these Leagues.
|
|
 |
 |
 |
|
 |
|
Teams for all inter-club galas are chosen by the individual League Managers. If you are not selected, don’t despair. Every effort is made during the year to use as many swimmers as possible so that they may then enter the League Championships at the end of the year.

Only swimmers who have competed in a particular league may enter that same league’s championships. It is likely
that you will be approached by the Team Managers but if you've got a specific interest, please let them know!

Individual
For all individual competitions you require Entry Cards. Once you have completed your entry form and paid the requisite money, all the entries
will be sent off to the Club responsible for the competition. They will then send back Entry Forms (blue for a boy, and pink for a girl) to our
Competitions Secretary. The cards will then be given to you.
Do not lose the cards. Do not forget to take the cards to the competition. No card = No race. When you arrive at the pool you will find 'card boxes' into which the cards must be placed.
Where competitions have an entry criteria (eg. specific times), details will be taken from the Club Database. No Club official will sign for Entry times that cannot be validated.
Times which have been achieved whilst not swimming for TWHST can be entered in the database subject to satisfactory evidence being provided.
Contact Karen Ient for further information.

This is a type of handicap system operated so that most swimmers have a chance to win. The competitions are graded A or B. Any swimmer with a time
below the quoted cut off time for that particular competition can enter the B grade. If a swimmer swims particularly well and beats the cut off time
he/she will be given a ‘Speeding Ticket’ instead of a medal/trophy. These Speeding Tickets should be regarded as prize possessions as they mean that
the swimmer is ready for A grade and Open competitions. Some competitions are Grade A & B. In this case a swimmer’s times are entered and the
organisers arrange the swimmers into the correct grade. To enter an A grade, the swimmer must have achieved a certain cut off or qualifying time
for the event.

To enter these competitions, look out for entry forms which are on Club Noticeboards some time before the
event. Completed entry forms must be returned by the date shown to the Club Desk marked for the attention of the Competitions
Secretary.
Due to the large number of entries for such competitions, it is important to plan ahead. Some entry
forms might be required up to two months in advance of a competition date.

Open Competitions (Individual)
|
|
 |
 |
 |
|
 |
These are competitions hosted by a club, where swimmers must submit personal entry forms to Compete. The TWHST Fixture List will identify which Open
Competitions the coaches would expect members with qualifying times to enter.
At these events you will be competing against other swimmers from other clubss and districts. The times you achieve may be recognised for entry into
Regional and National events. If a swimmer were to achieve a county record time, they or their parents should obtain a County Record Form from a club
coach. They should complete the form and send it to the County Records Secretary together with a copy of the official result sheet that confirms the
time, date, venue and event. County Records must be claimed within three months of the swim.

These are for swimmers aged 10 years and above and are held annually. Most recently the venues have been shared by Ponds Forge (Sheffield) and Leeds.
The Club encourages all members who make the qualifying times to enter. The Competitions Secretary will check all PBs prior to the last entry date
for the competition and will inform any swimmers who have qualified. The County Championships also include team relay events in age groups, which you
may be asked to compete in, even if you are not swimming in individual events.
The County Championships take place over several weekends throughout the year.

Other Events
There are many other events that Thirsk White Horse Swim Team members take part in throughout the year. Some of these are
entered individually and some are entered through the Club. These appear on the
Fixture List as they occur and sometimes in the
past. Where the events are open for entry in advance or there is an invitation to help, this will be included on the
Fixture List. Please follow the instructions there
to find more information.

Staff Training is the ongoing lifeguard training for club members who are aged 14 and over. To join, you
must take part in an Introduction Session when you are 14 (usually held each year in December) and, over the
two years until your 16th birthday, you must attend at least 33 hours of training.
Once you turn 16 you can qualify to be a lifeguard and work for both the swimming club and the swimming pool.
By taking part in this training you are committed to a Training Agreement to work for the Club and Pool
on a regular basis for a fixed amount of time.
